| CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
2026 Overview
Type: Wireless Headsets
Department: Communications
Useful Life: 20 years (system), individual
headset replacements as needed
Category: Equipment
Contact: FF/PM Helvey
Description:
The District is procuring a wireless headset system for its fire apparatus to replace the currentlyowned wired sets. Budgeted cost is $22,000.
Justification:
Ensuring that District firefighter/paramedics are properly equipped with a communications
system is paramount to crew safety and preparedness en route to emergency calls. Replacing the
wired headsets with a wireless system improves upon efficiency and effectiveness of the
apparatus communications systems. The above capital item is in alignment with the following
low priority strategic goal: Evolving Service Demands Met -> increased efficiency through
technology.
Budget Impact/Other:
Per GFOA best practices, operating impacts may be classified into one of three elements (or a
combination of the three) based on the nature of the purchase: 1) increased revenues, 2)
increased expenditures, and 3) additional cost savings. The procurement of wireless headsets will
incur increased expenditures through a one-time cost (purchase) and recurring costs
(maintenance). Typically, the District anticipates spending approximately $1,000 a year per
apparatus on maintenance and replacement costs.
