FIRE OPERATIONS
Turnout Gear—FF/PM DiRienzo
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) developed the 1851 Standard to establish
proper personal protective equipment (PPE) care and guidelines to protect the health and
safety of the fire service. These guidelines were developed to limit the exposure of fire
ground contaminants to firefighters. Turnout gear is inspected annually for damage and
any necessary repairs are made. The NFPA 1851 Standard requires the 10-year mandatory
retirement rule for turnout gear. NFPA 1500 suggests that departments issue two sets of
structural firefighting gear to limit exposure to carcinogens. The District has adopted a five
and five program to ensure compliance with NFPA’s 10-year mandatory retirement rule for
turnout gear as well as the NFPA 1500 best practice of having two sets of turnout gear.
Through the five and five program, firefighters are issued new gear every five years, and
keep their old gear as a backup during that timeframe.
