The Hazardous Materials Team Area of Responsibility is tasked with responding to
hazardous materials incidents within the District's jurisdiction and neighboring
communities' jurisdiction when requested. The team also provides hazardous materials
technicians to the hazmat branch of MABAS Division 2. Team members are tasked with
evaluating and purchasing new equipment assigned to all fire district vehicles to use on
varying levels of hazardous materials incidents, and also advanced devices hazmat team
members are trained to utilize on technical responses. Team members also provide hazmat
training for fire district members throughout the calendar year to meet the guidelines
established by the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OFSM). Team members are
responsible for calibrating, testing, and maintaining all fire districts' hazardous materials
atmospheric meters and monitors, response and decontamination equipment, inspecting
personnel protective equipment (PPE) such as Level A- MT-94 response suits, and ensuring
that Squad 3 is response ready with all assigned equipment and tools in working order. All
equipment is calibrated, tested, and/or maintained to the standards set by the specific
manufacturer, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the National
Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The OSHA Standard followed is 29 CFR 1910.120, and
the NFPA Standard is NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction
(WMD) Standard for Responders.
